Snow & Weather Conditions
We use 10 years of historical data to help you plan — not a live snow report.
Norway receives abundant snowfall from North Atlantic storm systems, particularly along the western coast and mountains. Cold Arctic temperatures preserve snow quality throughout the long Scandinavian winter. Despite a relatively modest summit elevation, the local microclimate and geographic position combine to deliver dependable winter coverage. Snowmaking infrastructure supplements natural precipitation during leaner periods, keeping conditions consistent. Natural accumulations of 3-6 metres are bolstered by on-mountain snowmaking, keeping the base consistent when nature falls short.
Best Time to Ski
Season runs from November to May. March and April offer the best balance of snow, daylight, and spring skiing conditions. Hemsedal sees its heaviest powder dumps during January and February, when winter weather systems deliver consistent accumulations and sub-freezing temperatures preserve the snow surface. March can also deliver excellent conditions — the snowpack is often at its deepest, and you may find fewer crowds on the mountain. Dive into PowderDays' snow data spanning 10 winters to identify the weeks most likely to deliver fresh powder.
What Makes It Special
Steep, dramatic terrain with excellent off-piste opportunities. Many resorts offer both alpine and extensive cross-country trail networks. Norwegian ski culture is deeply rooted — skiing was invented here. Expect a strong outdoor ethic, cabin traditions, and spectacular fjord scenery.
Norway is widely recognised as the birthplace of modern skiing. The Telemark region of southern Norway gave its name to the telemark turn, developed in the 1860s by Sondre Norheim. The first organised ski race was held in Christiania (now Oslo) in 1843, and the Holmenkollen ski festival has run annually since 1892.
Data Sources & Methodology
All snowfall statistics for Hemsedal are based on 10 years of historical data (2015-2025) from the Open-Meteo Historical Weather API, which provides ERA5 reanalysis data from the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF). Daily snowfall totals are queried at Hemsedal's coordinates (60.86, 8.57) and 1,450m elevation, then aggregated into monthly averages, record highs/lows, and powder probability scores. Powder probability represents the chance of receiving 15cm or more of fresh snow in any given week during that month.
